Laparoscopic pyeloplasty
Laparoscopic pyeloplasty has given urology less surgical complications than open pyeloplasty. Still humans strive to create and to improve, which is why, the next paradigm change in surgery has now occurred. A company called Intuitive Surgical has brought to the medical field a surgical robotic device called the da Vinci Surgical System. The da Vinci Robot is a system of modules that allow surgeons to control laparoscopic instruments and have a magnified 3 dimensional view in high definition while the robot can articulate the surgical instruments in 360 degrees, far beyond the ability of normal laparoscopic surgery. There appears to be one unanimous praise of the da Vinci system and that is suturing is superior to laparoscopic surgery.

Laparoscopic pyeloplasty, which had a problem in the beginning, because so few surgeons had the Laparoscopic skills to truly improve medical expectations verses open pyeloplasty, is now slowly being replaced by minimally invasive laparoscopic robotic pyeloplasty.

Creating an environment that a patient would feel secure in, especially when most surgeons are inexperienced in the minimally invasive laparoscopic robotic pyeloplasty is why the Columbia University Division of Urology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach Florida has brought Dr Fernando J Bianco the Chief of Robotic Surgery and Dr Alan Nieder to the Miami Urology Center. Dr Bianco’s background as a urology oncology fellow at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and his appointment as the Chief of Urology Oncology at the George Washington University Hospital made him the person they needed to run the Miami urology robotic surgery program.

While more and more hospitals are acquiring the da Vinci robot for the benefits of minimally invasive procedures, there are several things that need to be looked at when choosing a surgeon. The Mount Sinai Urology Department includes surgeons that follow the high standards to diagnose, treat, and follow up each patient that The Columbia University Division of Urology has instituted in their world renowned medical practice.

Laparoscopic pyeloplasty, open pyeloplasty, or minimally invasive laparoscopic robotic pyeloplasty many times needs to have other contributing pathologies to correct while having your procedure done. Our urologists have years of experience in the types of surgeries that can correct the uretero-pelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction such as:
1) Kidney surgery to remove a kidney tumor
2) Green light laser for prostate enlargement
3) Bladder surgery for bladder tumor
4) Prostate removal for advanced prostate cancer
5) Nephrectomy and partial nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma
